West Bengal has a deep and distinctive gold culture. The Bengali community views gold not just as jewellery but as a mark of cultural identity — particularly the traditional Shakha (white shell) and Paula (red coral) bangles paired with gold bangles that married Bengali women wear. Kolkata's Bowbazar is one of India's oldest goldsmith quarters. Durga Puja sees some of the highest single-festival gold sales in India.
Kolkata's Bowbazar neighbourhood has been home to gold and silver artisans for over 200 years. At its peak, the locality employed tens of thousands of craftsmen specialising in different aspects of gold jewellery making — it is considered one of the heritage craft quarters of India.

Durga Puja (October) is West Bengal's biggest festival and the highest gold buying occasion by far. Poila Baisakh (Bengali New Year in April), Dhanteras, and wedding season are also major periods.
Buy only BIS hallmarked gold. Look for the BIS logo, purity mark (916 for 22K, 999 for 24K), year of marking, and jeweller's identification mark on every piece.

If the goal is investment, Sovereign Gold Bonds give the same price appreciation plus 2.5% annual interest, and capital gains are tax-free at maturity. Physical jewellery has high making charges that erode returns.
