Assam has a vibrant gold culture closely tied to its Bihu festivals. The Assamese tradition of gifting gold Gamosa (a traditional cloth with gold border) and gold jewellery at Bihu makes these festivals the state's biggest gold buying occasions. Traditional Assamese jewellery — Junbiri, Lokaparo, Gajra — features distinctive designs unique to the region.
Guwahati is the commercial gateway to all of Northeast India — gold purchased here supplies buyers from Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh, making it a regional hub far beyond Assam itself.

Buy only BIS hallmarked gold. Look for the BIS logo, purity mark (916 for 22K, 999 for 24K), year of marking, and jeweller's identification mark on every piece.

If the goal is investment, Sovereign Gold Bonds give the same price appreciation plus 2.5% annual interest, and capital gains are tax-free at maturity. Physical jewellery has high making charges that erode returns.
